For years, Mike Rinder was the Church of Scientology’s chief spokesman and executive director of the Office of Special Affairs, its intelligence wing. In 2007, his defection was among the most surprising in an exodus of high-ranking officials from the church. Since then, he’s given several interviews, but none as complete as the videotaped discussions we had with him last month in his Florida home. In this first segment, he describes the conditions in “The Hole,” Scientology’s notorious concentration camp for fallen executives at its California headquarters. In other segments, Rinder also talks about the confessions forced out of prisoners, the constant indoctrination of church members, and much, much, more…
First, some background that we picked up while getting a tour of Scientology’s spiritual home.
Rinder was born in 1955 to Ian and Barbara Rinder in Adelaide. (He has two younger siblings, Andrew and Judy.) Ian was an entrepreneur and owned a series of businesses, including a wholesale grocery distributor, an aerosol canning company, a travel agency, a restaurant — he even raised goats at one time. Barbara kept the books.
Mike went to private schools growing up. “They were Christian but non-denominational. There were a lot of private schools in Adelaide,” he says, calling it Australia’s version of Omaha or Des Moines.
In 1959 or 1960, Rinder’s parents became interested in Scientology — L. Ron Hubbard had given lectures in Melbourne around that time, and left behind some active groups there and in Adelaide. After moving to Sydney for about a year, the Rinders then made a pilgrimage to Saint Hill Manor in England in 1966 or 1967 that lasted nine months. (Hubbard had just left the manor, which remains to this day Scientology’s European headquarters.) After a second trip to Saint Hill a few years later, Rinder had twice been around the world by ship by the time he was 15 years old.

I picked up a point where I had made a decision as a young child and that decision, which made sense at the time, really affected the way I have been handling life–be careful, don’t get close, keep quiet, don’t say anything that will get you in trouble, etc – gone. Somewhat scary as I hide behind those things at times. What we did with the grade zero processes cleaned up a lot of areas I had my attention on–brought my affinity up, forgave myself really widened the FN. Thanks. SS

Peace and calm–when you are playing the “human” game you are supposed to be “worried,” “concerned,” “struggling,” and generally efforting your way through life. Half of the gains are giving yourself permission to not play the game and then the other half is being able to spot the spots and realize where the counter effort is coming from. Most of the counter-intention comes from within. Once that’s handled–others’ counter intention has nothing to stick to. SS

Years ago I did a service-facsimile* handling and always wondered whether or not there was something else. Sure enough, way down–hidden away in a little tiny space–there it was. Not a big mean one but a tiny one that was effecting life. Sometimes I would have reactions in situations that I really didn’t understand and now it makes sense and I don’t need to have those reactions anymore. Thanks. SS

Hi Chris,
I tried to join the Scientology_Works group, but couldn’t figure out how to join. :(. But aside from that little non win, I have been winning BIG TIME!!!! I’m back to feeling like the big being I was many many years ago, but lost along the wayside with the little losses that add up to BIG losses and then all of a sudden can hardly get out of bed. You brought me back. And I know I had to look at the awful stuff, but you were there to make me DO it. I wonder if you have any idea of what you really did. I haven’t cried for a very long time. I have a BIG smile on my face and probably look kind of goofy, but I don’t care. I feel better physically, look younger, feel younger and have been accomplishing a lot. I even got out my paint box and started painting. I’ve been driving all over the place and am not afraid to drive anymore. The jobs are coming my way like mad, and though they are not my life dream jobs, it’s giving me some money and satisfaction. I have a lot of energy and am not tired anymore. My left eye still has the cataract, but I’ve been pushing through and driving anyway. I can see when I decide to see. So, I don’t know how to thank you, but know that I thank you from the bottom of my heart and take a HUGE win on bringing a dying being back to life. (Although, we can’t die really, lol, it sure feels worse than death.)

My win on Upper Level II is mostly about the C/S’s expert handling.
Pat’s sixth-sense style of C/Sing is like a marvel of science. She is fearless. Where the church organization throws out returnees on their ear, Pat is willing to dust them off and inspect what Hubbard REALLY did with us last life.
My win is how grateful I am, every day since I found her, that there is a safe place for me to pursue the bridge. It’s the only reason I came back. Until I met Pat, it was the only thing I couldn’t do. It had been a sad lifetime for a long time when she scraped me off the tarmac and said, “Well, look at YOU.”
Since I found Elma, time and time again she has C/Sed the exact action, exactly for ME — like something from movies. She delivers daily what the church could easily do with us, but they run away screaming for some reason. Makes you wonder what they’re gonna do in the future as more and more of us return.
Everyone should come to Elma. You can really be and do here.

Another success, as I sort out some of these things, and organize what wins were from what.
L12 was a fantastic action. I cant really tell you what exactly the wins were, as during it quite a bit of stuff blew, and proably at the time I could have given you a cog, but now nothing remains. I suppose, at the end was one major win, and that was Clear across all 8 dynamics.
The clear state of clear on the first dynamic was something incredible, and of course it changed me forever, or rather put me back to a condition before I operated in a stimulus response condition unknowingly. This rundown produced the same effect, but across all of the dynamics.
Certainty and unshakability as a being, with the ability to handle my own universe. Definately, and again as always, quite an understatement. Running off various characters with the tech of the level once and for all completely put me in my own valence. Forever.
I saw clearly who I was in this game of 8 dynamics, and all the stimulus response toward any dynamic, any beingness that was not me was gone. So of course, I had to be clear on all 8 dynamics.
Since everyone wants some sort of a tangible reality on abilites gained, I can tell you that I suddenly could communicate with ants, and tell them to do something, and they would do it. As well birds coming around and singing for me, of trees, flowers and grass talking to me. Most importantly it was two way communication.
Lol. Quite a state. Certainty of own universe. Old OT5 and 6 handled that to a very large degree, but this was the final icing on the cake.
Again, thanks to LRH for developing the tech, and thanks to Pierre for sorting it out for me, and ending cycle on any doubt about it forever.
