“Dear Anita,
What follows are some thoughts about training, as I once experienced it.
In January of 1957, I undertook to do the HCA course in Washington DC, at the Founding Church of Scientology. HCA stood for Hubbard Certified Auditor.
In London, the course was called the HPA, Hubbard Professional Auditor because in England to be certified meant you were crazy or insane or just plain nuts.
In 1957, and as out-growth of the Phildelphia Doctorate Course of 1952, as well as OT developements from the Phoenix research period, it was made quite clear to us students that becoming an auditor was achieved by moving thru Have, Do and arriving at Be, in whatever time you needed to assume the beingness of an auditor.
The course consisted of listening to taped lectures and discussing what we heard in an effort to insure that all the students understood what Ron was talking about in the Lecture.
We also received group auditing, and did co-auditing with fellow students.
Our course supervisor was named Dick Steves. He gave talks that were most enlightening on the subject of auditing, including questions and answers.
We were required to learn the Auditors Code and The Code of the Scientologist, and all the Axioms of Scientology.
E-meters were not in use and being able to engage a pre-clear in two way communication, and maintain it throughout a session was considered (correctly) very important–the heart and soul of an auditor’s beingness.
When, in the eyes of the course supervisor, you were auditing well, you could then sit for the HCA written examination, and since you knew what all the questions were, passing grade was 100 %. The idea was to learn the answers in advance of the exam, and then deliver them in writing. Sounds easy but it wasn’t. Then, if all was judged to be ok you were awarded the HCA certificate.
The next step was to study the requirements for being ordained as a Minister of the Church. Then an exam and ordination.
My next step was to get a job with the District of Columbia, as a GS -7 in the Sanitary Engineering Dept, a euphemism for the Sewer Dept.
My hope was to some day get on staff at the organization, something not easy to do, since most staff were highly trained and experienced and really did know how to audit.
I wrote this memoir with the intent to illustrate that in the 1950′s, Ron’s ideal of auditor training was really based on how willing the person was to BE an auditor. The time it took for the student to make the consideration that yielded the beingness of an auditor, varied from person to person, and just how much “have,” and “do,” was required before the beingness of an auditor came to pass .
Most importantly was the idea that anytime someone became willing to be an auditor was the point when they achieved the result of training, rather than how many check sheets they complete or how many lectures they heard, or anything regarding the mechanics of auditing.
This form of training greatly appealed to some folks and made real that “considerations take rank over the mechanical conditions of existence.”
Needless to say, as Ron and his organizations aged and became more and more fixated on the cookie cutter approach to training, with heavy emphasis on mechanics–the type of training that made natural auditors very happy and clearly defined for others that willingness does monitor ability–faded into the Western sunset.
If I had seized the opportunity to speak at your event, what I mention here would have been the theme of my talk.
Hope one of your speakers, if they haven’t settled on their talk, might like to pick up on the idea I’ve been mentioning and make it their subject to talk about.

Preface: When DM sent six people out to Denver (including Tommy and DM’s personal attorney Yingling) a year ago in an effort to silence Mike – an event I witnessed from start to finish – Mike made it crystal clear that he did not want his family subjected to the indignity of acting as pawns for DM in an effort to “handle” Mike. Like clockwork, the master of Black Dianetics launched a year-long ongoing campaign to use Mike’s family as something much worse (in my opinion) than pawns. Perhaps publication of this letter will help to bring about the cessation of DM’s relentless, sadist, familycidic (my made up term) behavior. – Marty Rathbun

You made a big issue out of my failure to respond to your letters, so I am responding herewith to the letters each of you sent.
I note that Jude sent me a letter when I was living in Denver – but didn’t send another in the second round after I moved near where she lives, and Benjamin didn’t send me a letter at all. I guess the Church is worried that I may respond in person by paying her or Benjamin a visit and it sort of blows the “You have disconnected from your family and refuse to communicate to them” line when I show up and they are unwilling to talk to me (as when I went to the Fort Harrison and requested to see Benjamin).

Doubt Formula:
1. Inform oneself honestly of the actual intentions and activities of that group, project or org, brushing aside all bias and rumor.
The intentions and activities of the group of people that are running the C of S are to follow the orders of a person who elected himself to be the Chairman of the Board of the C of S – namely David Miscavige. They, as a result have created a hierarchy that dictates off Source activities (all inclusive of ethics, tech and admin) and have thus have caused a contraction of Scientology.
While it is understood that the people under Miscavige didn’t start out with this intention, nor with those activities, stats prove that they are now fully engaged and are part and parcel to the problem. At the top of this “management” is David Miscavige.
To wit:
High prices from Mission to CL V Org, to AOSHs, AOs, FSO and Freewinds.
-Introductory services are cheap (this is about the only service that is affordable) After that, the prices for training and auditing become exorbitant and out of reach for your average every day citizen. If one does make it to the top of the Bridge, prices at the FSO will bankrupt your non-wealthy public person. There are a number of public who “sent their (OT VII) materials back” due to not being able to afford the “6-month refresher”. I don’t have the actual number, but do know of specifics. Point being, the masses cannot afford Scientology at any echelon. The intention is to make it difficult for the masses to acquire Scientology. Probably to weed out the “less able” as defined by the arrogant upper crust. The prices bar broad participation in Scientology.
Hammering the public for donations to IAS, ASI, Superpower, Building, Book Campaigns, and Ideal Org Buildings.

Hello, I am a highly trained OT and staff member. I want to talk to all
my friends and hope you will circulate this comm to others and get in better
comm from it. I believe the current problems in the C of S are due to a
completely hidden third party who is the source of trouble. Please bear me
out.
The APPARENCY of the problem is between the “field” (including splinter
groups) and the MANAGEMENT, including the Financial Police. The current
opposition between these factions has caused untold devastation to the
Church. However, I believe NEITHER SIDE is the source of trouble –
although EACH SIDE believes the OTHER SIDE is source. I do not know who
this hidden WHO is but it has been there a very long time.
A complete data analysis should go back at least to 1965 when ethics
conditions first came out, possibly earlier. Since 1965 forward one can view
the use of heavy force to control, fear tactics, and physical restraint, etc.
Those who were there remember the inception of these methods.
From that time forward, one finds the misuse of ethics conditions on
persons with great enturbulation resulting… one finds additives to the ethics
conditions in the form of make-wrong mechanisms including outright
physical body punishment. One finds ARCXs occurring, some severe enough
to cause former upstats to leave altogether.
It is true that some people left before this time, but it was due to the
case strain from running research processes. So from 1965 on, we find
individuals who had heavy force used against them or who were assigned
wrong conditions — then made wrong about the wrong condition.
